Christmas

Trees and Plants

Evergreens, holly, mistletoe, poinsettas are all part of Christmas celebrations.

Christmas Tree

Evergreens have been displayed in homes from early times to symbolise life during harsh winter seasons. The first record of a decorated tree is found in Riga, Latvia in 1510 where trees were brought into the homes on December 24th and decorated with wafers, cookies and candles. The custom spread in the 17th and 18th centuries and was adopted by the British in the 18th century. Americans did not fully adopt the custom until electricity brought Christmas lights for decorating the tree.
