District of Columbia celebrates Emancipation Day to commemorate the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act by President Abraham Lincoln on April 16, 1862. This act freed slaves within the District of Columbia, and the holiday is now celebrated there every year. Many events are held throughout the District of Columbia during April to mark the occasion.
