The Luck of the Irish

Body First

The Luck of the Irish is such a great saying and having a bit of Irish in me, I have always loved this expression. I feel like I have a little bit of Luck inside me. But the expression really started with a sort of sarcasm in the U.S. when the Irish started making fortunes in mining gold and silver, people would say “it’s the Luck of the Irish” as if to assume they were just lucky and didn’t work for the fortunes.

Others, however, think that the Irish were not very lucky because they had so many hardships in their country. They had to fight for survival. They had to work really hard. So it really makes you question, what is luck? Some people would say winning the lottery, or finding a $20 bill on the street. Other would say it is being in the right place at the right time. While others would say survival and waking up with air in your lungs and a heartbeat is luck. Luck is all about perspective.

My perspective on the Luck of the Irish is that they were unlucky when the potato famine hit and many of them migrated to America, some losing loved ones or their own lives. But as a people, they turned those unlucky events into luck by fighting for survival, by working hard, and by putting themselves in the position to be lucky.

So on St. Patrick's Day, let's celebrate the Luck of the Irish by celebrating their endurance and hard work that brought them good fortune. Let's wear green and feel lucky for all of the things that we are fortunate to have in our lives.
