Holidays & Observances in Laos
Laos is a landlocked country in South Asia. Its culture has been most affected by the surrounding countries of Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, but it manages to maintain its own unique identity as well. More than half of the population practices Buddhism, and Buddhism has been a major factor in the cultural development of Laos. Most of the rest of the people practice traditional Animistic religions. Tradition is very important in Laos, as is demonstrated in many Laotian holidays. The Laotian New Year, called Boun Pimai, is the most important festival of the year and incorporates many unique traditions such as water dousing as a sign of renewal and elephant processions.
