Holidays & Observances in Sao Tome and Principe
Sao Tome and Principe is an island country off the west coast of Africa. It was uninhabited before being taken over by the Portuguese who brought in slaves from other African countries to work the plantations. Forced labor only ended recently at around the time of independence in 1974. As a relatively new free country the identity of Sao Tome and Principe is still developing. Its culture reflects both its African and Portuguese influences. The main religion of Sao Tome and Principe is Roman Catholicism brought by the Portuguese. Almost all of the population practices some form of Christianity, so Christian holidays are enthusiastically celebrated by all.
