Buy Nothing Day takes place on the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. This day is also Black Friday, a day when people all across the country rush to the stores to take advantage of the lowest prices of the year in preparation for Christmas. Many people dislike this show of consumerism, especially when it imposes on Thanksgiving, which is supposed to be a time to be thankful for what you already have. For those people, Buy Nothing Day is a form of protest. They don’t spend any money on this day at all to take a stand against consumerist values.

Despite its tie to the American holiday, this holiday was first celebrated in Canada. Once it became more international the date was changed to reflect what was then the busiest shopping day of the year. People in countries all over the world celebrate this holiday to promote a global boycott of buying material goods.
