Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles)

Sukkot is a Jewish festival that falls on the 15th day of Tishrei on the Jewish calendar. It is often called the Feast of Tabernacles. It lasts for 7 to 8 days and represents the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering the desert following their Exodus from Egypt. The first day of Sukkot is considered the most holy and is treated like Shabbat. Work is forbidden on this day. Jewish families traditionally celebrate this day by creating a small walled structure called a sukkah out of plant material. This represents the type of structures the Israelites would have lived in while living in the desert. People will often have meals in this structure during Sukkot and some people may even sleep in it.
