Palm Sunday in Spain

Catholics all over the world celebrate with palms at their masses and the Spanish are no different. People carry palms to be blessed by the priest and taken into their homes to prepare for Easter. Palms were a part of the Biblical story of Jesus entering Jerusalem and being greeted by the crowds holding palms.

Valencia Region - city of Elche

There are many palm trees in this area of Spain, planted during the time of the Moorish invasion of Spain to create more shade in a hot region. Every year the palm trees are covered with black bags to block out light and turn the palms white. Then they are turned into artwork to display in parades and across the city. These palms are exported every year all around the world.
