New Year’s celebrates the end of the year and the start of a new one. In many places, this is a time for great celebration. Public parties are held in cities all around the world on New Year’s Eve, where people get together to count down to the New Year at midnight. Many people hold private parties as well, getting together with friends and family to count down to midnight. Fireworks are often set off, with the most elaborate ones being displayed at midnight. This is also a time for renewal. Many people feel they have a fresh start at the start of the New Year. They make New Year’s resolutions – promises of things they intend to do throughout the year. New Year’s Day is celebrated on January first only for those who use the Gregorian calendar. Those who use other calendars celebrate the New Year of their own calendar, but they often also celebrate the Gregorian New Year.
