Celebrating and preserving heritage breeds is an important one within the context of agriculture, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. International Heritage Breeds Day, observed at the end of the week in the 3rd week in May, is a day for initiatives or events dedicated to the conservation of heritage breeds.

Heritage breeds refer to traditional, often historic, rare breeds of livestock that have been raised by farmers over the centuries. These breeds often have unique characteristics that make them well-suited to specific environments, production systems, or cultural practices. 

Some examples of heritage breeds across different livestock categories:

Cattle

• American Milking Devon: Known for their dual-purpose nature, providing both milk and meat.
• Belted Galloway: Recognized by their distinctive white belt around their midsection, they are hardy and well-suited to grazing.

Poultry

• Barred Plymouth Rock (Chicken): Dual-purpose breed known for both meat and egg production.
• Narragansett Turkey: Recognized for its excellent foraging abilities and flavorful meat.

Sheep

• Shetland Sheep: A small-sized breed known for its hardiness and a variety of wool colors.
• Lincoln Longwool: Known for its long, lustrous fleece and historically used for both meat and wool.

Goats

• Kinder Goat: A dual-purpose breed producing milk and meat, developed by crossing Pygmy and Nubian goats.
• Myotonic (Fainting) Goat: Known for its unique tendency to "freeze" when startled, they are often kept for meat production.

Pigs

• Tamworth: Known for their foraging abilities and flavorful pork.
• Large Black: Recognized for its hardiness and ability to thrive in outdoor environments.

Many heritage breeds face challenges such as declining populations, loss of genetic diversity, and competition from more modern, high-production breeds.
