National Anthem Day celebrates The Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the USA. The words were written by Francis Scott Key during the war of 1812 to celebrate the perseverance of the American Flag even when it was surrounded by mass destruction. They were set to the words of To Anacreon in Heaven, a British song written by John Stafford Smith. The Star Spangled Banner was used by the US Navy and other national groups before being officially adopted as the national anthem on March 3, 1931. America celebrates the anniversary of the national anthem every year on March 3rd.
