World Sea Turtle Day is June 16

World Sea Turtle Day is an important international holiday celebrated on June 16th to recognize the importance of sea turtles and their conservation, as well as to highlight the threats that these iconic animals face each and every day.

There are seven species of sea turtles in our oceans today, all of which are endangered or critically endangered due to poaching, habitat destruction, ocean pollution and entanglement in fishing gear. On this special day we take time out to honor these majestic creatures and raise awareness about their plight. 

How to Celebrate World Sea Turtle Day

First, we can raise awareness about the conservation efforts that are necessary to protect sea turtles. We can learn more about the species and how they live in our oceans, their migration patterns, and the threats they face. We can also get involved in volunteer programs or donate to organizations that are actively working on protecting sea turtles and their habitats. Furthermore, we can spread the word about sustainable seafood and why it's important to buy responsibly.

We can also take action to reduce threats that sea turtles face. We can participate in beach clean-ups or pick up trash when visiting the beach so that sea turtles don’t get entangled in plastic waste or other debris. We can also advocate for reducing light pollution near beaches, as bright lights can disrupt nesting females and disorient hatchlings trying to find the ocean.
