Vitamin C Day is celebrated on April 4th every year and was created to help educate people about the importance of Vitamin C in our daily diets. This vitamin helps to ward off many diseases and is great for our overall health as well. Some of the many benefits Vitamin C provides include protection against heart diseases, lowering cholesterol, and helping to regenerate tissues in the body. Vitamin C is found in many fruits and vegetables such as apples, citrus, and dark green vegetables. This is one of the easiest vitamins to consume and one of the healthiest, so do your best to eat Vitamin C not only on this holiday but every day of the year!
History of Vitamin C
Vitamin C has a long and interesting history. It was first discovered by British physician Sir Thomas Barlow in the 19th century. In his research about the causes of scurvy he discovered that citrus fruits lessened the symptoms and cured the patients. Barlow did not know about the full effects of Vitamin C, but he was able to realize the importance of fruits such as oranges that contained large amounts of Vitamin C. Scurvy had existed for more than a century before a cure was found. Before the cure, scurvy was often deadly and killed many British sailors on their sea voyages that often lasted months. Since the realization that citrus fruits are important in not only curing scurvy but in a daily diet as well, the amount of people with scurvy has rapidly declined.
Vitamin C Day was founded in 2019 by the company SkinCeuticals. As well as being very beneficial to us inside our bodies, vitamin C is also very beneficial to our skin. This day was created to celebrate the many years of research that have gone into vitamin C and the benefits it provides.
