Globalization is causing some languages in the world to fade or become endangered of disappearing altogether. Almost half of the 6000 languages in the world are endangered with less than a hundred used in the digital world. International Mother Language Day promotes linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism to encourage people to appreciate the mother tongues and cultural traditions.
Multilingualism is an important factor in harmonious communication between peoples and is of particular importance to the United Nations. In order to preserve and promote multilingualism, the UN made the decision on the eve of International Mother Language Day to celebrate language days for the six official languages of the UN.
