Mawlid (also known as Mevlid, Mevlit, Mulud, Mouloud, The Prophet's Birthday, and other names regionally) celebrates the birthday of Islamic Prophet Muhammed. It is celebrated on the 12th day of the Islamic month Rabi’ al-awwal. Observances vary depending on location and religious belief. Some people view this as a time for great celebration. Public parades and feasts are held to commemorate the occasion. Others do not believe in celebrating birthdays. They often choose instead to spend Mawlid as a special religious holiday, fasting and reading the Quran.
